It is sad that people lost their savings in due to something that is not dependent on whatever they do. Sometimes it's just a case of bad luck - in my opinion this is the most unfortunate thing that could happen to money we save for whole our life. Recession is something that will be over sooner or later, but the marks of its cold hands will be visible for decades.

I retired a year and a half ago from a position as an attorney making a six figure income with benefits. I was 61 when I retired and would not have thought I could do it if I had not read and followed the steps in Your Money or Your life. My income is now 1/16th of what it was before. It was quite scary to make the move and the day before I was to retire, I woke up terrified and ready to change my mind. I now find that my life is so much richer and joyful and I don't miss the income or benefits at all. I am currently working part time at two new careers that I absolutely love--spiritual direction and real estate. I have not increased my income yet, but I don't care because I am having so much fun. I feel that I am now really there for others and that is worth more than a regular salary. Yes, it is quite possible to live on a lot less money than you are used to having. Actually the freedom from being in a dysfunctional work environment is priceless. I love my life now.
